Tax planning for growing San Diego County companies
Tax preparation reports what already happened. Tax planning changes what happens. For owners of growing businesses the biggest savings usually come from decisions made during the year: how the company is structured, how owners are paid, when equipment is bought, which retirement plan is in place and whether a state election is made on time.
Scalesight builds a tax plan around your actual numbers and revisits it during the year as results come in. Every recommendation is grounded in the Internal Revenue Code and California law. We do not sell shelters or promise a specific outcome; we show you the options, the tradeoffs and the paperwork each one needs.

California planning issues
California is one of the least conforming states to federal tax law. Federal rules again allow 100 percent bonus depreciation on qualifying property, but California does not, and its Section 179 limit is $25,000. A purchase that wipes out federal taxable income can still leave a California bill, so we project both returns before you buy.
The elective pass-through entity tax is another California-specific lever. Qualifying S corporations and partnerships can pay state tax at the entity level, which can restore a federal deduction for owners affected by the cap on state and local tax deductions. Payment deadlines are strict and missing the first one can limit the benefit, so this is reviewed early in the year.

Tax Planning for Business Owners questions
What is the difference between tax planning and tax preparation?
Tax preparation is filing accurate returns for a year that is over. Tax planning happens during the year and looks at decisions that change the tax result, such as entity structure, owner compensation, retirement contributions and the timing of purchases.
When should business owners start tax planning?
Ideally early in the year, with check-ins mid-year and before year end. Some strategies, such as retirement plan setup, the pass-through entity tax election and owner salary changes, have deadlines that fall before December 31.
Is the California pass-through entity tax worth it?
For many owners of profitable S corporations and partnerships it can be, because it may restore a federal deduction for state taxes. The value depends on income, the number of owners and your personal situation, so we calculate it before recommending it.
Can tax planning help if I am planning to sell my business?
Yes. Deal structure, allocation of the purchase price, entity type and the timing of the sale all affect how much you keep. Planning a year or more ahead gives you the most options.
