A CPA firm for San Diego County's growing businesses

San Diego County had 3,298,634 residents at the 2020 Census, spread across 18 incorporated cities and a large unincorporated area. Its economy leans on defense and the military, tourism, international trade, and research and manufacturing, with life science and technology clusters in the north and cross-border commerce in the south.

That variety creates very different accounting needs. A defense subcontractor in Kearny Mesa, a medical device company in Carlsbad, a contractor in Escondido and an importer near Otay Mesa all file business tax returns, but their books, credits and cash cycles have little in common. Scalesight builds tax preparation, accounting and fractional CFO work around how each business actually operates, for owners doing roughly $1M to $30M in revenue.

We are a virtual-first firm. Clients across the county share documents securely, connect their accounting systems and meet with their CPA and CFO by video on a set schedule, so the same team can support a business in Fallbrook as easily as one downtown.

Cities we serve in San Diego County

City pages cover local industries, licensing and the ZIP codes we serve. More city pages are being added.

Unincorporated communities we serve

Businesses outside city limits answer to the County of San Diego for many permits but file the same state and federal tax returns. We serve owners in these communities and the ZIP codes around them.

City of San Diego communities

Within the City of San Diego we work with businesses in every community planning area, including:

Local rules that affect San Diego County businesses

City business licenses

Most cities in the county require a business license or tax certificate for companies operating inside city limits. The City of San Diego calls it a Business Tax Certificate. Renewals are easy to miss when you grow into a new city.

Sales and use tax

The CDTFA administers sales and use tax, and district taxes mean rates vary across the county. Retailers, restaurants and companies that deliver need the right rate for each location.

California conformity

California does not follow federal bonus depreciation and caps Section 179 at $25,000. LLCs pay an $800 annual tax and S corporations pay 1.5 percent of net income, so state planning matters as much as federal.

San Diego County CPA questions

What parts of San Diego County does Scalesight serve?

We serve businesses in all 18 incorporated cities, from San Diego, Chula Vista and Oceanside to Del Mar and Solana Beach, as well as unincorporated communities such as Fallbrook, Ramona, Lakeside, Spring Valley and Rancho Santa Fe. Our work is delivered through secure online tools and scheduled video meetings.

Do I need a CPA located in my city?

No. What matters is that your CPA understands California and local rules, such as city business licenses and sales tax rates that vary across the county. We work with clients countywide without requiring office visits.

Which San Diego County businesses are the best fit?

Owner-led companies with roughly $1M to $30M in revenue that want business tax preparation, accounting and fractional CFO planning handled by one team.

Do sales tax rates differ across San Diego County?

Yes. The statewide base rate applies everywhere, but several cities add voter-approved district taxes, so the rate can change from one city to the next. Businesses with multiple locations or deliveries should confirm rates with the CDTFA for each address.

Can you help with both business and personal tax returns?

Yes. Personal tax preparation is available for business owners with complex returns, so K-1 income, estimated payments and state taxes stay coordinated with the business.
