Personal tax preparation for growing San Diego County companies
For most business owners, the personal tax return is where the business finally shows up on the bill. S corporation and partnership income flows through on Schedule K-1, an LLC that owns the building reports rent on Schedule E, and the California pass-through entity elective tax creates a credit that only works if the personal return claims it correctly. When the business and personal returns are prepared by different firms, those pieces are easy to miss.
Scalesight prepares personal tax returns for business owners as a support service to our business tax preparation, tax planning and fractional CFO work. That means your federal Form 1040 and California Form 540 are prepared from the same numbers as the business return, with estimated payments, owner pay and year-end moves planned together. Personal tax filing for owners is part of one plan, not a separate errand in April.
What our personal tax preparation includes
- Federal Form 1040 and California Form 540 or 540NR, including part-year and nonresident returns
- Schedule K-1 income from S corporations, partnerships, LLCs and trusts, with basis and at-risk tracking
- Rental real estate on Schedule E, with separate federal and California depreciation where they differ
- Claiming California pass-through entity elective tax credits from entities that made the election
- Federal and California estimated tax calculations, including California's 30, 40, 0 and 30 percent installment schedule
- Stock compensation, sales of a business interest and other capital gains, which California taxes as ordinary income
- Multi-state returns for owners with income or property outside California
- Responses to IRS and Franchise Tax Board notices on returns we prepare
Who this service is for
- Owners of S corporations, partnerships and LLCs whose business returns we prepare or review
- Business owners with rental properties, a building held in a separate LLC or other real estate
- Owners preparing to sell all or part of a company
- Households with income in more than one state, or who moved into or out of California
- Owners who want personal tax planning tied to business decisions, not just filing
Where California personal tax differs from federal
California does not follow several federal rules that matter to business owners. The state does not allow the federal qualified business income deduction under Section 199A, does not allow federal bonus depreciation on business property that flows through to you, taxes capital gains at the same rates as other income, and has a much smaller standard deduction. For 2026, the FTB's Form 540-ES instructions list a California standard deduction of $5,706 for single filers and $11,412 for joint filers, while the federal amounts under Rev. Proc. 2025-32 are $16,100 and $32,200.
Estimated payments follow a different rhythm too. California requires 30 percent of the year's estimate by April 15, 40 percent by June 15, nothing in September and the last 30 percent by January 15, while federal payments are four roughly equal installments. Owners with California AGI above $150,000 must base estimates on the lesser of 90 percent of this year's tax or 110 percent of last year's, and those with California AGI of $1,000,000 or more must use the current year. A 1 percent Behavioral Health Services Tax applies to taxable income above $1,000,000. On the federal side, the deduction for state and local taxes is limited to $40,400 for 2026 and phases down when modified AGI is above $505,000, which is why the PTE elective tax election at the business level can matter so much to the personal return.
How it works
Review
We look at last year's returns, your K-1s and anything that changed this year.
Plan
Before year end, we project the federal and California tax and set estimated payments.
Prepare
We prepare your returns once business K-1s are final, so nothing is filed twice.
File and follow up
We e-file, confirm acceptance and calendar next year's estimated payments.

Personal Tax Preparation questions
Do you prepare personal returns for people who do not own a business?
Our personal tax preparation is designed for business owners and their households, where the personal return depends on K-1s, rentals or a sale of business interests. If your situation is a straightforward W-2 return, a lower-cost preparer is usually a better fit.
Why should the same CPA prepare my business and personal returns?
Because the numbers depend on each other. Owner salary, distributions, the PTE elective tax, depreciation and loss limits are decided at the business level and land on the personal return. One team can plan both and catch mismatches before they become notices.
When are 2026 California estimated payments due?
For calendar year 2026, the FTB schedule is April 15, June 15, September 15 (with no required payment) and January 15, 2027, at 30, 40, 0 and 30 percent of the required annual amount.
Can I file my personal return before my business K-1 is ready?
You can, but it often leads to an amended return. We usually extend the personal return when K-1s are late, pay an estimate with the extension, and file once the business numbers are final.
Do you handle part-year California residents?
Yes. If you moved into or out of California, we prepare the part-year resident return and allocate income between states, which is especially important in the year you sell a business or exercise stock options.
