Tax planning for San Diego companies
San Diego owners run everything from defense contractors and biotech firms to restaurants and real estate partnerships. Scalesight's tax planning projects the year for the business and the owners, then recommends moves to make before December 31.
Every plan shows federal and California results side by side, since the state does not follow federal bonus depreciation, the QBI deduction or the new research expensing rules.
San Diego is the county seat and its economic center, with 1,386,932 residents at the 2020 Census. The largest sectors of the city's economy are defense and the military, tourism, international trade, and research and manufacturing. The city's own financial report lists Naval Base San Diego, UC San Diego, Sharp HealthCare, Scripps Health and Qualcomm among its largest employers.
San Diego planning situations we see often
- Defense and government contractors in Kearny Mesa and Otay Mesa planning around contract timing and equipment purchases.
- Biotech and tech companies in Torrey Pines and Sorrento Valley with research costs and equity compensation.
- Real estate partnerships and owners with rentals across the city, where depreciation and passive loss rules matter.
- Restaurant and hospitality groups Downtown and in North Park with multiple entities and tipped staff.
What is included
- Entity structure review: sole proprietorship, LLC, S corporation, partnership or C corporation
- Reasonable compensation and distribution planning for owners
- California elective pass-through entity tax decisions and payment timing
- Retirement plan design, from Solo 401(k) plans to cash balance plans
- Equipment and vehicle purchase timing under federal and California rules
- Qualified business income deduction planning
San Diego specifics
Every business operating inside city limits needs a City of San Diego Business Tax Certificate, renewed annually, in addition to state registrations. Sales tax rates inside the city differ from some neighboring cities because of district taxes, so multi-location retailers and restaurants should confirm the CDTFA rate for each address.
California is one of the least conforming states to federal tax law. Federal rules again allow 100 percent bonus depreciation on qualifying property, but California does not, and its Section 179 limit is $25,000. A purchase that wipes out federal taxable income can still leave a California bill, so we project both returns before you buy.

Tax planning questions from San Diego owners
Does the City of San Diego business tax affect planning?
The City of San Diego Business Tax Certificate is a required annual registration with a modest fee. It is part of compliance rather than a major planning item.
What should I do before December 31?
Run a projection, decide on purchases and owner pay, fund retirement accounts, decide on the PTE election and set January 15 estimated payments.
How often do we meet?
At least twice a year, mid-year and in the fall, and more often for clients who also use our fractional CFO service.
