Personal tax preparation for San Diego companies
Scalesight prepares personal returns for San Diego business owners as a support service to our business work, so the K-1, rentals, estimates and any PTE credit all follow one plan.
Owners in San Diego often have equity from a local tech or biotech employer, rental property and a business at the same time. We prepare Form 1040 and California Form 540 with all of it in view.

The largest sectors of the city's economy are defense and the military, tourism, international trade, and research and manufacturing. The city's own financial report lists Naval Base San Diego, UC San Diego, Sharp HealthCare, Scripps Health and Qualcomm among its largest employers.

San Diego specifics
Every business operating inside city limits needs a City of San Diego Business Tax Certificate, renewed annually, in addition to state registrations. Sales tax rates inside the city differ from some neighboring cities because of district taxes, so multi-location retailers and restaurants should confirm the CDTFA rate for each address.
California does not follow several federal rules that matter to business owners. The state does not allow the federal qualified business income deduction under Section 199A, does not allow federal bonus depreciation on business property that flows through to you, taxes capital gains at the same rates as other income, and has a much smaller standard deduction. For 2026, the FTB's Form 540-ES instructions list a California standard deduction of $5,706 for single filers and $11,412 for joint filers, while the federal amounts under Rev. Proc. 2025-32 are $16,100 and $32,200.

Personal tax preparation questions from San Diego owners
Do you prepare personal returns for people without a business?
Our focus is business owners and their families. If you do not own a business, we may refer you to another preparer.
How do California estimated payments work?
According to the FTB, individuals pay 30 percent in April, 40 percent in June, nothing in September and 30 percent in January.
Can you help with stock options?
Yes. Incentive stock options, nonqualified options and RSUs are taxed differently, and California rules can differ. We plan exercises and sales with you.
